Keeps meat department well stocked and appealing at all times to meet customer requirements. Smiles and greets all customers, resolves customer concerns. Answers questions on preparation of various meat cuts. Cuts, trims, bones and grinds meat for display or as ordered by customer. Uses power equipment such as a saw, grinder and cubing machine. Cuts and weighs steaks and chops for individual servings. Shapes and ties roasts.
Butchers, cleans and prepares fowl using a knife or saw. May debone turkey, chicken and other fowl.
Packages meat and fowl, places merchandise on trays for cases or display counter. Does suggestive selling and may help wrap and weigh meat at service angus case. Insures that meat and fowl are in saleable condition and properly priced for sale.
Rotates stock to insure freshness. Works rewraps as needed for profit and quick sales. Handles spoiled and damaged product according to established procedures and standards.
Responsible for conditions in the meat department. Follows department’s cleaning schedule and sanitation guidelines to insure that all work areas including cases and coolers are well maintained and clean. Follows through to insure compliance with health regulations, local, state and government weights and measures and labeling laws. Disposes of trash. Empties bone cans.
Helps meat manager control inventories through proper ordering. May perform some clerk duties such as helping unload, check and store merchandise, supplies and equipment. Reports shortages and overages to manager. Helps meat manager control department expenses.
May assume the responsibility for the department operations in the absence of the meat manager. May also be called upon to assist in other departments when requested by Meat Manager or person in charge of the store.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) desirable.
Must have strength and dexterity to lift 60 pounds with ease. Must know how to properly and safely operate equipment utilized in moving merchandise (must be 18 and trained in order to use power driven equipment). Experience dealing with customers required.
